When Derby County decided to sell winger Luke Thomas to Barnsley in the summer, it's fair to say that it was a decision that raised a few eyebrows of fans at Pride Park.

Thomas was viewed by many Derby supporters as an exciting young player and many felt that he had the potential to make an impact for the first team in the future.

The 20-year-old joined Derby in early 2016 and rose through the ranks at Pride Park, going on to make his first-team debut for the club in the 2017/18 season.

After making a couple of appearances for the Rams in the Championship, Thomas spent last season out on loan Coventry City, where he scored five goals in 44 appearances in all competitions and impressed with his performances in League One.

He was definitely viewed by a lot of Derby fans as one to watch for the future and many supporters couldn't understand why he'd been allowed to leave the club - especially after he showed great potential while on loan with the Sky Blues.

When the Rams announced that Thomas was leaving Pride Park for Oakwell, many fans were quick to question the decision and express their disappointment.

If a lot of Derby fans questioned the club's decision to sell Thomas at the time, they surely would have questioned it even more after seeing the start the he made to his Barnsley career.

The winger made an instant impact for Barnsley, scoring just 13 minutes into his debut for the club to hand them a deserved victory over promotion favourites Fulham - latching on to Mike Bahre's pass, before showing good feet to cut inside and score with a powerful shot.

If any Derby fans doubted his ability or questioned whether Thomas had the potential to make an impact in the Championship, this was surely their answer.

However, things haven't quite worked out for Thomas since then. He's continued to get opportunities in the team in the Championship, but his strike against Fulham on the opening day of the season remains his only goal for the club so far.

He's shown that he's got the potential to make an impact at this level, but Barnsley have struggled so far this season and have picked up just two points since their victory at Oakwell on the opening weekend.

Daniel Stendel, a manager who had shown throughout his relatively short time at the Oakwell that he was prepared to give young players a chance, has now parted company with the club, so it'll be interesting to see if Thomas continues to get opportunities in the team under the club's next manager.
