Barnsley have launched an outrageous attempt to sign former Manchester City and Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli, according to BBC Sheffield.

Balotelli, who won both the Premier League and FA Cup during his three seasons at The Etihad, is now a free agent following his release from Serie B outfit Brescia.

And BBC Sheffield believe that the Tykes spoke to the Italian's agent Mino Raiola about the possibility of bringing Balotelli to Oakwell.

Following his departure from Manchester City in 2013, the Italy international has enjoyed brief spells at Anfield, AC Milan and Nice before spending three years at Marseille, whom he left for Brescia.
