Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Barry Bannan has revealed that he's sure he'll be staying with the club this season.

Bannan has been with the Owls since 2015, and has gone on to make 259 appearances in total for them, which includes 46 from last year's league campaign.

The Scotsman's efforts weren't quite enough last term though, as Sheffield Wednesday were relegated from the Championship after a disappointing year both on and off the pitch.

Bannan has previously been linked with a move away from Hillsborough, with Swansea City being one of the teams rumoured to be keen on finalising a deal to sign the 31-year-old.

Speaking in a recent interview with The Star, Bannan issued a defiant statement, and felt as though he owed it to the fans and club to win promotion back into the Championship at the first time of asking.

“Yeah… I’m sure I’ll be here. I’ve got a job to do in getting the team back to the Championship, and I’m looking forward to doing that.”

“I’ve been the leader of the team, I’ve been here for so long, and getting relegated is never nice - especially in my first season as captain.

“I took it personally and it wasn’t a good feeling. I feel that I owe it to the club and fans to get them back to the Championship.”

Bannan and his Sheffield Wednesday team-mates are set to get their League One campaign underway this weekend, when they travel to The Valley to take on Charlton Athletic, in what could potentially prove a tricky test for Darren Moore's side.

The Verdict:

The club's supporters will be eager to see him stick around.

Bannan has been a key player for Sheffield Wednesday in recent seasons, and the Scotsman will be keen to play his part in their promotion bid from League One this term.

Some might be surprised that the Scotsman is 'sure' he'll be at Hillsborough this season, as they might feel as though he's good enough to be playing his football at a higher level than the third-tier.

But he clearly feels as though it's his duty to play his part and guide them back into the Championship this season, which certainly seems as though it's an achievable target.
