Sunderland will not have long to lick their wounds following a heartbreaking defeat on penalties in the Checkatrade Trophy final at Wembley against Portsmouth at the weekend, with the small matter of Accrington away next up for Jack Ross' side on Wednesday night.

The Black Cats still have real aspirations for automatic promotion from League One at the first attempt, currently in fourth place in League One, six points off second placed Barnsley but with three games in hand on their rivals.

So will Cup heartache impact on Sunderland's promotion chances?

We discuss........

Jay Taylor

“On the contrary, it may spur them on.

“They might not want to go back to Wembley and disappointment once more.

“Going up second avoids that route, and they will be pushing to achieve that.

“It is a test of strength and character now with how Sunderland respond in the face of adversity.”

Louie Chandler

"I doubt it will too much.

"It could in that Portsmouth will be given a lift from their win, but I would back Ross to pick his team up pretty quickly.

"It was actually a very good performance on the whole at Wembley but they just fell short."

Alfie Burns

“Not really.

“They played well enough at Wembley against a good side.

“It should give them motivation to get over the line in the race for promotion.”
