Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson has recently revealed that Aiden McGeady has been told he can leave the club in the January transfer window.

It comes after the Sunderland Echo reported that the Irishman was involved in an incident at the club's training ground this week ahead of their game against Blackpool.

Football League World's Sunderland fan pundit Charlie Hodgson has issued his thoughts on this recent update on McGeady, and voiced his frustrations at the club's stance on the matter.

"I don’t think it’s particularly the right call but then again, I feel if it was other players who maybe aren’t as good then I would think otherwise.

"I think it’s a matter of consistency for the club but I don’t think it’s the right call as I don’t trust the recruitment team to replace him with adequate quality."

The regular punter labelled McGeady as 'the best player in the division' in terms of quality, with the midfielder already having six goals to his name this season, whilst previously netting 14 goals in last year's campaign as the Black Cats narrowly missed out on promotion back into the Championship.

"It’s a known fact that McGeady hasn’t been at his best this season but when he is on form he’s the best player in the division quality-wise.

"It’s a matter of stability until January as we're really underperforming and this isn’t going to help that. We need a 10/10 January in order for us to go up this season whether it's through the play-offs or automatic promotion."

Hodgson felt that promotion is still a possibility, even without McGeady. But the fan pundit was quick to state that the January transfer window could make or break their season, whilst also claiming that he has his doubts as to whether Phil Parkinson is the right man to take the club forward.

"Promotion isn’t off the table as we're only five points of the play-off places in the grand scheme of things. We need a brilliant January for us to get promoted in my opinion and probably a change of manager.

"Replacing McGeady is going to be a very hard task and whether Parkinson is up to the task is up for debate. I think he needs to go if we stand any chance of going up."

Sunderland are next in action this weekend when they take on Blackpool, where they will be without McGeady, who has reportedly been involved in an incident on the club's training ground recently.
