West Bromwich Albion are reportedly eyeing Javier Pereira as they look for a new head coach.

The Baggies have struggled to find a replacement for Sam Allardyce and, according to TEAMtalk, Pereira is now in contention to take charge.

But is he the right man for the job?

I mean, it’s an interesting one to say the least and not a name many would have plucked out of a hat.

It strikes me that they are looking so far afield, mainly because it shows how badly they have managed this whole process.

They will be ending up with someone who is fifth, sixth, or maybe seventh choice on their list and it would be a massive gamble to bring Pereira in.

His only past experience of coaching in this country came at Fulham and that was just as an assistant.

I don’t see many fans of the Baggies being inspired by this one and I think it’s safe to say he’s not really the man they need.

I think most people would agree when I say that Pereira does not look like the right fit for this role at all.

Pereira has spent much of his career as an assistant and the only two clubs he's actually managed at a decent level since 2009 are Alaves and Henan Jianye in the Chinese Super League.

The Spaniard may have spent time as assistant to Slavisa Jokanovic at Fulham and then later became their Assistant Director of Football Operations, however, I don't think he has enough about him or enough pedigree as a manager to guide West Brom back to the Premier League.

Granted, West Brom's options don't look too promising right now, especially as it doesn't look like they want to pay compensation for an in-work manager, but that's exactly what Pereira is as he's still at Henan in China.

But I guess it makes sense for Baggies owner Lai Guochuan to be interested in Pereira considering he's based in China and will be able to witness first-hand how he's done with Henan, so it's not exactly a tenuous link but I still doubt he'd be right for the job at hand.

In all honesty, this feels like a tough one to call in my opinion.

Pereira does have experience in England, so he is at least familiar with football in the country, and that is something that ought to help if he does take over at The Hawthorns.

However, that experience in England did come as an assistant rather than a manager at both Fulham and Watford, meaning there would be some questions about whether he would be able to take on a managerial role that you imagine will carry a great deal of pressure, given West Brom will no doubt be expected to push for promotion next season.

The fact that Pereira is also something of a left-field name may mean this is not the most exciting appointment in the eyes of Baggies fans, which could put him under a bit of pressure to win them over with a strong start to life in the dugout should he take over.

With that in mind, it does seem as though this would be something of a risky appointment for West Brom to make.
