Middlesbrough manager Jonathan Woodgate will be desperate for a change in fortune for his side, after their latest draw left Boro in 22nd place in the Championship, heading into the international break.

Woodgate has already identified a target to strengthen his squad, with 24-year-old Fleetwood Town attacker Wes Burns on his wish-list, according to The Sun on Sunday (November 10, Page 59), after impressing under Joey Barton this season in League One.

So would Burns be a good addition at the Riverside and is he actually needed?

“I don’t see where he fits into Woodgate’s current side with their current set up not really having any need for an out-and-out winger making a regular impact.

“Middlesbrough have landed on a 3-5-2 as their preferred formation recently under Woodgate and this would mean he doesn’t have much use as a typical winger, with the wing-backs more suited to the flanks.

“It’s clear that Middlesbrough are operating with a much more modest budget than recent years so scouting the lower leagues might present the bulk of their business in January, but they still need to find the right quality for their system.

“Burns has four assists and no goals so far this season so he’s not exactly setting the league alight and this is a division below Boro. I just don’t think Woodgate’s side need this signing right now.”

Dean Cooke

"This is a signing that wouldn't be getting too many supporters excited at Middlesbrough. The League One player is highly-rated, but as a forward his record isn't one that would give hope to Boro fans.

"In 15 league appearances so far this season, he still hasn't scored, and that's a really poor record. It doesn't matter what type of forward you are, you have to do better than that.

"He is just 24-years-old, so could be coming into his prime in the next few years, but in all honesty he won't get into this Boro team ahead of Britt Assombalonga so there is no point spending money on a player that won't strengthen the first XI.

"Boro are in a spot of bother at the moment, and if they don't improve quickly then they could find themselves in a serious relegation battle, would Burns be someone to change their fortunes; probably not."

"I think Burns could be a really good signing for Middlesbrough and he'll be hungry to show that he can make the step up and impress in the top-flight.

"He can play anywhere across the front-line and would add some real pace and guile in the attacking third, something that Boro have really been craving since they lost Adama Traore to Wolves.

"They don't score enough goals and that is worrying for Woodgate's side as they look to avoid the drop this season, and they would be hoping that Burns gives them that extra spark.

"Of course, he is yet to find the back of the net this term so some might see it as a risk, but people forget just how impressive he was last season."
