Darren Bent has been left surprised by the prospect of John Terry potentially taking over from Phillip Cocu at Derby County.

Cocu's future at Pride Park is uncertain, with Derby sitting bottom of the Sky Bet Championship table following a dismal start to the season.

The Rams have recorded only one win from their opening 11 league matches, and it remains to be seen where Cocu's future lies with an impending takeover on the horizon.

Quiz: Did these 17 Derby County players ever actually score a league goal for the club?

The Daily Mail have recently reported that West Brom and Derby County could offer Aston Villa coach John Terry his first job in management.

Terry has been Dean Smith's right-hand man at Aston Villa since he took over at Villa Park in October 2018, overseeing Villa winning the play-offs in 2018/19.

Speaking to Football Insider, though, Darren Bent has been left baffled by the thought of Terry leaving Villa Park to take up the potential managerial role at Pride Park.

He said: "I can see him being a manager, but not yet. Derby are rock bottom of the Championship and they’ve got Cocu who is an experienced manager.

“We’re talking about a guy in John Terry who this will be his first managerial job and his task is to get them off the bottom of the table.

“I don’t quite understand it, I don’t get it, for me, it’s a bit of a weird one.

“I’m all for people getting opportunities and I think John Terry will get his opportunity but I don’t think this is the right one for him at the moment.”

The Verdict

I don't think Terry would be the right man for Derby if the role became available.

He may have learnt a lot from Smith during his time at Villa, but he lacks experience in management and Derby need someone who can get them out of this rut.

I also believe that if they were going to target a young, up and coming coach to take over from Cocu, then it should be Liam Rosenior, who is highly regarded as a young coach.
