Aston Villa host Swansea City in the first match of the Dean Smith era with the new Villa boss hoping he can inspire his side to a much needed win, to improve on their statistics of taking only 15 points from a possible 36 so far this season.

Though blessed with plenty of attacking options, it is the defence that has caused problems for Villa and fans will be keen to see if Smith and his new management team have managed to forge some improvement there, in the short time they have been at the club.

But is there one thing that should be concerning Aston Villa fans right now?

We discuss.....

Jacob Potter

Too much competition for places?

Smith is likely to give all of his squad a fair crack at the whip but with a good amount of squad depth, he could struggle to keep all the members of his Aston Villa side happy with their game time.

The likes of Scott Hogan could struggle for game time this season, especially with the good form shown by fellow strikers Jonathan Kodjia and Tammy Abraham.

George Dagless

It'll be more wonder than concern and that's how things are going to pan out under Dean Smith.

Every new manager brings a sense of intrigue and this appointment is no different.

Villans will just hope that he proves to be the right appointment after heavy links with other figures.

Gary Hutchinson

One thing? There’s a huge great list of them.

Let’s stick a pin in the one big issue, shall we? The back four.

If that doesn’t get sorted, Dean Smith may as well be Delia Smith.

Without a solid defence they’re nothing and right now, I don’t see it getting sorted.

Louie Chandler

Still the defence.

Smith I would say is guaranteed to do a terrific job with the Villa attack but their back line will always be a worry until January.
