“I do not think we should be letting him go” – Charlton Athletic fan pundit reacts to transfer interest from Reading and Blackpool in winger

This article is part of Football League World’s Terrace Talk‘ series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Charlie Kirk’s ride at Charlton Athletic has not been a smooth one so far.

Since arriving at the club in 2021, the player made just eight appearances before joining Blackpool on loan for the second half of the season where he got three assists in nine appearances.

The winger returned to The Valley this summer although journalist Alan Nixon has reported that Blackpool, Reading and Hibernian are all interested in gaining the services of the 24-year-old this summer.

However, with Ben Garner now the new manager at Charlton, Kirk could have a new opportunity with the Addicks.

With that in mind, we asked FLW’s Charlton Athletic fan pundit Ben Fleming if he thinks his club should keep the winger: “Interesting to hear the Charlie Kirk rumours.

“I think a lot of us probably expected him to stay at Blackpool, I thought he had a decent loan by the sounds of it and it looked like they might want to take him on so I was quite pleased to get him back and personally I do not think we should be letting him go, no.

“He’s obviously a player that had a bit of trouble settling last year but that was a formation he wasn’t used to and I think this year, with a manager that’s playing a formation that suits him and he’s still young and developing, I think he’s someone that we really need to be holding on to.

“So yeah, I wouldn’t really be keen to let him go out on loan or leave permanently. I think he’s someone we need to be keeping and developing into the top League One player that I think he is.”

Quiz: Can you remember the score the last time Charlton Athletic played at these 26 stadiums?

What was the score when Charlton last played at Wembley Stadium?

The Verdict:

Kirk’s time at Charlton so far has not been ideal and therefore you can see why a move away from the club may be on the cards.

However, it’s worth remembering that he performed well for Blackpool in the Championship last season and therefore, clearly has potential to be a good player.

With a new manager in at the club now, there is no point making a rushed decision, especially when he remains under contract at The Valley until 2025.

It may be worth Ben Garner trying him out in his side and making a decision on his future later down the line.
