Nottingham Forest manager Martin O'Neill is taking full advantage of the free transfers available this summer, with 34-year-old full-back Alan Hutton the latest name to be linked to a move to the City Ground, as reported in the print edition of the Sun on Sunday (June 23, Page 60).

Hutton has most recently been at Aston Villa where he spent eight years.

So would Hutton be a good signing for Forest?

We discuss........

Toby Williams

"I think this would be a good signing for Forest.

"Hutton has plenty of experience at this level, and knows all about getting promoted from the Championship having done so for Villa last season.

"He may not be a regular starter at The City Ground, but he could still be a reliable option when called upon, just as he was throughout his time at Villa Park.

"Bringing him in on a free transfer also makes this a smart move for Forest financially, as they will have less to lose if he fails to make a difference at Forest."

Gary Hutchinson

“I do not get this.

"Hutton was looking leggy and tired last season, so how Forest think there is another season in him I don’t know.

“Hutton has been a good players, there is no denying that. He has played at a high level and is experienced, but his time at a good level is surely up.

“He’s 34 now and will turn 35 before Christmas. I know players can look after themselves better these days, advances in sport’s science have made a huge difference to longevity, but speed and acceleration are lost with age – that can’t be saved by looking after yourself.

“This is a huge step backwards for Forest and when coupled with Sammie Ameobi’s capture, it suggests to me the money might be tighter this season.”

George Brooks

"This could turn out to be a very good signing for Nottingham Forest, as Martin O'Neill looks to build a team that will challenge for promotion next season.

"Hutton is a good player and he's got a considerable amount of experience in the Championship.

"Even though he's coming towards the end of this career, he did a very good job for Aston Villa last season and his experience of winning the play-offs could be key for a team that will be hoping to challenge for promotion.

"Even if he doesn't start even week, he will provide O'Neill with some more depth at full-back and increase competition for starting places within the squad.

"He could turn out to be a very good signing for the Reds, especially on a free transfer."
