Aston Villa manager Dean Smith will be beginning to make plans for life in the Premier League next season, following a 2-1 Championship play-off final win over Derby County at Wembley.

One name that must be either on-top or very near the top of Smith's transfer wish-list must be loan defender Tyrone Mings, who has been a tower of strength at the heart of the Villa defence, leading ex-Leeds striker Noel Whelan to suggest to Football Insider that Villa should make a massive bid to secure the 26-year-old.

“Villa must do everything they can do sign Tyrone Mings,” Whelan said. “He is an absolute beast. He stopped the rot for Villa when he joined and transformed their defence.

So is Whelan right to suggest Villa must sign Mings?

"Get it done Villa.

"Mings has been excellent since arriving in the January window and was a big part as to why the Villans went up.

"If he's not going to play at Bournemouth next year Villa have a great chance of getting him in."

George Brooks

"I couldn't agree more with Whelan here.

"Mings has been magnificent for Villa in the Championship and would be an excellent signing.

"He helped transform the Villa defence into one of the strongest in the Championship and he is definitely ready to return to the Premier League.

"Mings has made it clear how much he has enjoyed his time at Villa Park and Dean Smith should make signing him on a permanent transfer one of his biggest priorities for the summer."

Jacob Potter

"This should be Dean Smith’s top target.

"Mings has already shown that he is a class above for Aston Villa this season, and certainly will feel as though he has unfinished business in the Premier League.

"I can’t see Bournemouth having a place for him in their squad, and Villa should definitely be looking at signing him permanently as soon as possible."
