Birmingham City were dealt an enormous blow on Monday evening when the extent of midfielder Maikel Kietenbeld’s injury was revealed.

After a clash with Kalvin Phillips in the middle of the pitch on the hour mark during the Blues’ 1-0 win against Leeds United, the Dutchman required lengthy treatment on the pitch before eventually being stretchered off.

And the club confirmed that he would now be out of action for at least six months and possibly as long as nine.

The 28-year-old has been an ever-present in Garry Monk’s squad this season and will give him a serious headache for the rest of the campaign and summer as well.

With just five points currently separating them from the drop zone, just how big a blow could this prove to their survival hopes?

We discuss…

Jacob Potter

“It's a huge blow.

“There's no doubting that. But I just can't see Birmingham slipping deeper into trouble with just a few games remaining of the season.

“They're considerably stronger than the teams around them, and I can't see them being troubled, even with Kieftenbeld out for six months.

“It will be hugely frustrating though, as he's been impressive this season.”

George Harbey

“This is absolutely terrible news for Birmingham.

“To be honest, I don’t think this will affect their hopes of survival too much as I think they will stay up with ease after their win at the weekend.

“But Kieftenbeld has been their unsung hero this season, and to have him out for even the start of next season is a massive blow.”

Toby Wilding

"He will be a big miss for Birmingham.

"Kieftenbeld has been a big presence for Gary Monk's side this season, and it is players like him they would have relied on to get them over the line this season.

"You wonder if whoever replaces him will be able to have such an impact."
