New Aston Villa manager Dean Smith knows that defensive recruitment will be a priority when the January transfer window opens as he looks to find competition for the current pairing of James Chester and Axel Tuanzebe.

Reports in Italy suggest that Arsenal centre-back Laurent Koscielny is being tracked by Villa after Gunners boss Unai Emery indicated that his captain was free to leave the club.

But is a move to Villa a realistic proposition for Koscielny in January?

We discuss.....

Gary Hutchinson

No, not at all.

His wages would be a big stumbling block.

He’ll go to China or America, somewhere that his name guarantees a decent payout.

Aston Villa would be better focusing on players offering value for money.

Jay Taylor

No, I think the rumour is totally outlandish and unrealistic.

If he leaves Arsenal there are surely other clubs higher up the food chain that will be after his services.

It is like adding two and two together and getting five such is the bizarre nature around the link.

I don’t see it happening whatsoever.

Jacob Potter

It’s possible, but unlikely.

With the Arsenal defender not featuring for Emery’s side this season, he will actively be looking for a move away from the Emirates.

But I can’t see Villa being a potential destination for the Frenchman who certainly has the ability to be playing at a higher level than the Championship.

George Harbey

I can’t see it happening at all.

Surely he’d move back to France or want to play in Europe in the latter stages of his career?

Why do Villa insist on signing high-earners to put stress on their wage bill?
