Lee Gregory has been in brilliant form for Sheffield Wednesday this season scoring 16 league goals and contributing six assists in 36 appearances.

As a result of this, there has been reported interest in the striker from Wigan Athletic, Middlesbrough and Derby County, as per the Daily Mail.

Gregory has played in the Championship regularly although his goal tally has never been at such a height in the higher tier so this interest may come as a surprise to some.

With that in mind, we asked three of FLW's writers for their opinion on a possible move for Gregory from Wigan Athletic.

Declan Harte

Gregory could be quite a useful addition to the Wigan squad as they prepare for life in the Championship.

His 16 goals in League One this season was an impressive return, and the Latics could use that kind of goal scoring prowess in the second division.

However, the 33-year old’s most prolific seasons have always come in the third tier, having never quite managed to be as ruthless in the Championship.

This signing would surely be to pad out the squad as opposed to strengthening the starting lineup, but it would still be a good addition to the team.

I don't think this would be the best move for Wigan Athletic to make this summer.

Gregory has had a good season in League One with Sheffield Wednesday, but I'm not convinced he would be as prolific in the second-tier.

Perhaps on a free transfer he would be worth the gamble, but given he will be 34 in August, I'd be hesitant to pay any sort of transfer fee for the forward, which Sheffield Wednesday will command due to him having one year left on his Owls' contract.

Furthermore, the Latics have Will Keane scoring goals up front for them already.

Keane scored 10 more than Gregory in the third tier this season and as such you would back him to outscore Gregory in the second tier, too.

Ned Holmes

I can't say I see the sense in this one.

Lee Gregory has enjoyed a fantastic finish to the 2021/22 campaign with Sheffield Wednesday but now 33, there are question marks about his ability to contribute at that same level in the Championship.

The last thing the Latics need is another striker that might not be able to cut it in the Premier League.

Will Keane is coming off the best season of his career and hoping to prove himself in the second tier and Callum Lang, while an exciting attacker, only has one appearance to his name in the division.

They've got a bit of experience in Josh Magennis and if they're looking to add something else up top, it should be a proven goalscorer at that level, not Gregory.

Perhaps that's a bit harsh as the 33-year-old has had some good seasons in the Championship but he struggled in his last few seasons in the division and is better off staying in League One.
