By hook or by crook, Swansea City were able to hold onto Daniel James in January, despite the player being on the verge of leaving for Leeds United.

With that saga put to bed, for now, the Championship club had plans to offer the impressive 21-year-old a new long-term deal to secure his future at the club for years to come.

But talks have stalled, with the Welsh side struggling to agree to terms with James over a possible buyout clause.

This is according to BBC Sport, who have reported that little progress is being made with the attacker's representatives.

An ‘unrealistic’ buyout clause of £4million is being mentioned by BBC Sport as to be holding up a new deal.

James has two goals and four assists to his name this term and has turned out countless impressive performances for the Swans.

With this latest development arising, can our team of FLW writers see James agreeing on a new deal with the Liberty Stadium outfit?

We discuss…

Jay Taylor

“If Swansea know what is good for them, they will give him what he wants.

“The new deal is only for their gain anyway, as James will eventually leave – probably in the summer.

“So, it’s all for financial gain and not to keep the player long-term.

“If Swansea don’t want to miss out on more money, agree to the terms that suit the player.”

Toby Wilding

"James has acquitted himself well at The Liberty Stadium since his deadline day disappointment.

“But it seems increasingly unlikely that the winger will remain in Wales beyond this season.

"It is understandable James will be keen to get his chance elsewhere.

“It is hard to see him willing to risk that opportunity for the sake of a clause in a contract; it would seem he doesn't need to sign."

Louie Chandler

“Not any more.

“Let's be honest, the main reason the club want to agree a new deal is more than likely to secure a bigger fee for him when he does leave.

“This release clause looks like a sticking point, however.”

George Harbey

"Not with the teams interested, no.

"If Swansea were higher up in the table then this would have convinced him to stay.

"I can still see him signing for Leeds."
