Nicholas Ioannou is close to leaving Nottingham Forest and joining Aris Thessaloniki on loan, as exclusively confirmed by Football League World.

Ioannou joined Forest from APOEL in September, and has since made five appearances for the Reds with four of those coming under Chris Hughton.

But the left-back hasn’t featured since the end of October, after being sent off in the 1-1 draw with Luton Town at Kenilworth Road.

The 25-year-old has been left out of the squad for the last six games, and a loan move away is now imminent. Sources have told Football League World that Ioannou is set to fly to Greece to complete a loan switch to Aris Thessaloniki – a move which will see him join until the end of the season.

Here, we discuss this departure from the City Ground…

You can certainly understand why.

The defender has fallen out of favour completely at Forest, so the player is within his rights to try and leave this month.

From the club’s perspective, it would be silly for them to stand in his way.

Hughton has made it clear that the left-back is not part of his plans moving forward so there would be no point blocking such a move.

They have a big squad, time to cash in and move on.

This really wouldn’t surprise me to see Ioannou leave, nor would it appear any major loss to either Forest or Chris Hughton himself.

The Cypriot international has failed to make any real impact at the City Ground since joining from APOEL in the summer, and it looks like Hughton has completely washed his hands with the left-back following his sending off at Luton back in November.

Ioannou hasn’t made a single appearance since that red card, and having played just four times prior to that, he doesn’t seem to be in Hughton’s plans moving forward, which makes a January exit a sensible move for both parties.

Can you name each of these 17 ex-Nottingham Forest players just by looking at these 3 clues?

Midfielder, former Scotland international, joined Forest on loan from Manchester United?

I am slightly surprised they are letting him go so soon.
Given he only joined Forest back in the summer, the fact they are already to let Ioannou go, means you feel they have not really given him a proper chance for him to impress at The City Ground.
Indeed, when you consider the fact that Ioannou did look to be an impressive and promising option for Forest at the start of the season, it does feel as though this could be something of a risk to let him go, particularly if Hughton feels he needs to change things up in the second half of the season.
That being said, the fact that this is a loan move means that Forest could at least have the insurance of bringing hm back into contention at The City Ground in the second half of the season, and that at least feels like a sensible stance to take, when you consider what he may still be able to offer them in the future.
