Football League World's Stoke City fan pundit Andrew Barnett says the club's midweek win against Wigan Athletic will act as a springboard for the rest of their season.

The Potters saw off the Latics 1-0 at the DW in the League Cup to earn a much-needed win following opening Championship defeats to Queens Park Rangers and Charlton Athletic, and Barnett was impressed with what he saw.

"We played with a real desire to start putting things right," the regular punter told Football League World.

"We were good in possession and passed the ball around with great confidence.

"The only down side was not taking a good number of the chances we created. If we put this right this game will be seen as a massive springboard for the season ahead."

It was a match that saw Nathan Jones introduce the club's exciting young centre-back Nathan Collins into first-team action, and he put in quite the performance.

Made captain of the side, he also netted the winning goal after just ten minutes, no doubt  leaving a lasting impression on his manager and the watching fans.

And Barnett was no different.

"At 18-years-old he was made captain for the game and didn’t seem fazed whatsoever," he said.

"He was confident in the air and played like a well-seasoned pro which can only bode well for the future.

"We have some massive games coming up against Derby, Preston and Leeds, however, if we can play like we have in the last two games, keep our defence tight and start taking more opportunities we will be more than fine.

"Only time will tell but I am really optimistic after what I have seen in the last week or so that we can be more than competitive in this league this season."
