Steve Bruce has resigned as manager of Sheffield Wednesday but his move to Newcastle is far from being complete.

According to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon, Wednesday chairman Dejphon Chansiri is still yet to agree a compensation package with Newcastle over Bruce's departure.

Another hurdle is the price it will cost Newcastle to take Bruce's staff from Hillsborough too, with Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence also involved in the move.

The Sun reported yesterday that Mike Ashley submitted a £4m compensation offer for Bruce, but the former Aston Villa boss walked out before Wednesday came to a decision on whether to accept or decline.

The ongoing saga between the clubs and The Owls' delayed response suggests they will only be satisfied once Bruce's full compensation is agreed, which is believed to be valued at £5m.

From Wednesday's perspective, their strict stance is understandable. Bruce has only been with the club since February and it is a blow to lose a manager so quickly, particularly as plans for the season are well underway.

Alan Nixon also suggests that the club has drawn up a list of managerial replacements for Bruce, but have not yet made any approaches, despite his resignation.

The Verdict

It would appear that the move is in its final stages, but with two owners both acting stubborn and refusing to negotiate it appears that this saga will continue for a while yet.

There have been conflicting reports regarding an agreement over Bruce's compensation package, but even if it is agreed the two clubs have to settle the issue of Bruce's assistants.

Bruce seems determined to join Newcastle at any cost and it must now just be a matter of time before he takes over at the Magpies.
