Hull City winger Josh Bowler has provided an honest assessment of the 3-1 defeat to Barnsley on Saturday, suggesting that his side "didn't turn up".

Gerhard Struber picked up his first victory as Tykes boss on the weekend, in a result that also brought to an end their 17-match winless run.

Alex Mowatt opened the scoring for Barnsley in the 23rd minute and turned creator in the second half as he teed up Mike Bahre who doubled the lead.

Keane Lewis-Potter halved the deficit inside the last 10 minutes but Conor Chaplin put the result beyond doubt with his 95th-minute strike.

The result sees Barnsley move to within five points of safety, while the Tigers are now five points back from the top six.

Speaking to the club website after of the game, Bowler assessed what had gone wrong for Hull at Oakwell.

He said: "I think we just didn’t turn up from the first whistle to the last.

“It just wasn’t the standards we have set ourselves, we know that, we are all disappointed but we need to go back on Monday and work on it.

“We have mentioned it before, we knew it wasn’t going to be an easy test and we were all raring to go, we just didn’t click. We know the game was going to be tough and we’re not taking any game lightly, it just wasn’t our game today and we have got to really work over the coming week.

“We want to go into every game winning it, it is a setback, but it is a setback that we can’t dwell on, it’s a setback that we can’t let affect us, we have got to go into the Stoke game and try and get three points there.”

The 20-year-old joined on a season-long loan from Everton in the summer and has made 14 Championship appearances for the Tigers–the majority of which have been from the bench.

His next opportunity looks likely to come against Stoke City at the KCOM Stadium next Saturday.

The Verdict

After their 4-0 hammering of high-flying Preston North End on Wednesday night it was difficult to see Hull not coming away with three points against bottom-of-the-table Barnsley.

However, the Tykes victory shows the unpredictability of the Championship.

The Tigers will no doubt be determined to prove it was a one-off and get back to winning ways against Stoke on Saturday.
