Hull City loanee Ola Aina kept Premier League star Riyad Mahrez quiet in Nigeria's 1-1 draw with Algeria on Saturday, while playing out of position, as per Own Goal Nigeria.

Aina's side were on course for a 1-0 win before a controversial penalty but the defender, spending the season at the KCOM Stadium on a temporary basis from Chelsea impressed throughout.

Speaking about the match, he said: "It was a good game. I think I played a good game.

"It was a tough game as well because Algeria are not a weak side. I was up against Mahrez as well for the majority of the game and it it was a good challenge for me, because the world knows how good a player he is. For me to be able to defend as well as I did against Mahrez, I was happy."

The Chelsea man also revealed that former Blues midfielder Jon Obi Mikel was instrumental in convincing him to play for Nigeria, in September.

He said: "The one person that I would say has been an influence to me a little bit is John Obi Mikel. I was first talking to him three years ago about it [playing for Nigeria].

"It has finally happened. Anything that comes from Obi is respected and I was happy that he invited me to come and join the team.

"My family are also very proud Nigerians and they are happy to see me play for the Super Eagles. I am happy with it as well."

The Verdict:

It bodes well for Hull fans that they have a player on their books capable of dealing with Premier League quality, even when he's playing out of position.

Hull lost a lot of players in the summer but quality reinforcements like Aina give them an outside chance of making it back to the big time at the first attempt.
