Hull City are interested in signing defender Ben Heneghan from Sheffield United, Sky Sports Transfer Centre (06/08, 19:51) have reported.

Heneghan spent last season on loan with Blackpool, making 49 appearances in all competitions to help the Seasiders to a respectable tenth place finish in League One.

According to the latest reports however, Sheffield United have now told Heneghan that he is free to leave Bramall Lane following the Blades' promotion to the Premier League last season, and Hull could look to take advantage of that.

The Tigers are said to be interested in a move for the 25-year-old, as they attempt to boost their defensive ranks before the close of the summer transfer window at 5 PM on Thursday.

Hull have already completed the signing of one senior centre back this summer, after securing the free transfer of Ryan Tafazolli, following his release by Peterborough United at the end of last season.

There are just 12 months remaining on Heneghan's current contract at Bramall Lane, meaning this could be the Blades last chance to receive a fee for the centre back.

Earlier this summer, it was reported that both Reading and Sunderland were also interested in signing the defender.

The Verdict

I could see this being a good move for Hull.

Heneghan has proved he is a more than capable centre back at Football League level, and as a result could be a useful addition at the KCOM Stadium this season.

With Sheffield United also keen to move the defender on, you can't see this being the sort of deal that would cost Hull too much financially, so it could suit them in that respect as well.

You imagine that Heneghan too could be open to the move, given it looks unlikely he will get too many opportunities to feature for the Blades this season, and a move to the Championship looks as though it would give him the chance to prove himself at a high level of football again.
