Championship side Hull City are considering making loan deals for goalkeeper Nathan Baxter and centre-back Di'Shon Bernard permanent, according to a report from Hull Live.

The Tigers were very busy in the latter stages of the January transfer window, with five players joining the club in the final few days, made possible by owner Acun Ilicali and his funds.

Hull were previously under a transfer embargo prior to the Turkish businessman's takeover due to a loan deal the Allam family took out last year to cope with the costs of the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, Ilicali ensured that loan was paid off shortly after his arrival at the MKM Stadium, allowing the club to pursue permanent deals for Regan Slater and Ryan Longman, with Marcus Forss, Allahyar Sayyadmanesh and Liam Walsh arriving on temporary terms until the end of the season.

Former Brighton and Hove Albion man Longman initially joined the second-tier side on loan - but they paid £700,000 to the Seagulls on Monday to take the wide man on a longer-term deal.

Not satisfied with just making the 21-year-old's stay longer, the Tigers are also looking into the possibility of sealing permanent agreements for Baxter and Bernard who arrived on temporary deals from Chelsea and Manchester United in July.

Both have been crucial figures in Hull's turnaround in recent months, with their defensive record in November arguably saving previous manager Grant McCann's job and the Blues' shot-stopper's introduction into the starting lineup proving to be a real turning point for the club's 2021/22 campaign.

The Verdict:

These permanent additions would be a huge boost for Shota Arveladze - and they may even be able to negotiate a cut-price fee for the duo considering they aren't likely to play a big part in their parent clubs' future next season.

This especially applies to Baxter who turned 23 last November and will be looking for a permanent destination before he gets any older - because the lack of stability Lewis Baker has had in his career in terms of numerous loan spells is something the goalkeeper won't want to go through any longer.

And because he isn't likely to break through at this stage with Edouard Mendy and Kepa both options for Thomas Tuchel, with Marcus Bettinelli in support, it wouldn't make sense for the Blues to retain the Hull loanee any longer unless one or two of those options depart at the end of the campaign.

Even then, Tuchel will probably be on the search for another shot-stopper - and that should be enough for the 23-year-old to push for a permanent move to the MKM Stadium - something that wouldn't be a surprise considering how much he seems to be enjoying the experience.

Getting Bernard over the line may be a slightly more difficult task considering he's a couple of years younger - but he's still 21 and at this point - he has to prioritise first-team football over everything else.

This is why he should also be looking to engineer another transfer to East Yorkshire when his loan agreement comes to an end.
