Sport Witness report that Hull City are in the hunt to sign Boavista's 25-year-old Portuguese striker Renato Santos.

The report claims that the Tigers have been in the race for Santos ever since Portuguese manager Marco Silva took over at the helm at the KCOM Stadium and that new Hull boss Leonard Slutsky is still keen on the attacker to add creativity to his attack, as he seeks to engineer a return to the top flight during his maiden season in English football.

The report also states that Santos has just the one year left on his Boavista contract, so Slutsky might fancy his chances of engineering a cut-price deal for the Portuguese forward - something that should appeal to the Hull board, who have been attempting to piece together a squad to make an instant return to the Premier League on something of a shoestring - having sold many key players and seemingly reluctant to reinvest that money in replacements for the former Russia manager.

The report also claims that Boavista are not looking to actively sell the frontman, and with Hull yet to make an official approach, a deal is far from done, but Hull's long-standing interest certainly raises the possibility of a deal being done, and Hull fans will be pleased that a player who has been thoroughly scouted over a period of time is on the radar, as opposed to a hastily targeted player.

The Verdict:

Santos made 32 Liga NOS appearances last season, finding the back of the net on just four occasions and laying on just two assists for team-mates, so it would be fair to say he is not yet a consistent and reliable source of goals or chances.

Nevertheless, his experience in the Portuguese top flight should more than equip him for the English second tier, and at 25, he has plenty of time to hone and improve his game.

Also, there is the added bonus that Hull have been long-term admirers of the player, which always reassures me that a player will be a success moreso when they are simply a target out of the blue, as desperation sets in.
