The Australian midfielder featured 42 times for Nigel Clough’s Burton side in the Championship last season, scoring ten times in the process.
Irvine only joined Burton in last year’s summer transfer window from Scottish side Ross County FC but his impressive form has caught the eye of Leonid Slutsky, as the Hull boss looks to bolster his midfield following Sam Clucas’ departure.
Dropped into a deeper defensive midfield role this season, the 24-year-old has been in equally fine form with one goal from the three games he has played in the Championship however, he did miss Burton’s game against Middlesbrough due to suspension.
The deal to bring the towering central midfielder to the KCOM stadium is reportedly worth around £2 million including add-ons.
This transfer will be the second in as many days for the Tigers following on from their signing of Nouha Dicko from Wolves yesterday for a reported £3.5 million.
This is a great move by Hull.
Jackson Irvine only needed one season to prove his worth at Championship level and to pry him away for only £2 million is a great bit of business by the club.
One of the highest compliments we can give the player is that he plays quite a similar game to Manchester City’s Yaya Toure.
A defensive midfielder who can burst forward to create attacking opportunities for either himself or his teammates whilst not forgetting about his defensive duties.
If Hull want to get straight back into the Premier League at the first time of asking then they are going about it in the right way with this signing.
