Hull City offered to multiply Keane Lewis-Potter's salary by around three times in a desperate attempt to keep him at the club, as per an update from Hull Live.

The 21-year-old was one of the first names on the teamsheet for the Tigers last season, starring in all 46 league matches and recording 12 goals and three assists in the process.

He turned out to be a key figure in keeping the East Yorkshire outfit afloat during their first season back in the Championship, having featured heavily in League One for the club during the 2020/21 campaign.

The young winger, who can also operate as an advanced midfielder, a wing-back and a striker, also stood out during that promotion-winning season and generated a considerable amount of interest in his services over the past year.

Not only were the Bees keen on getting a deal over the line - but Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United were also linked with a move for him.

Earlier this summer, Lewis-Potter effectively had two years left on his deal at the MKM Stadium with the club's option to trigger an extension in mind, giving the Tigers the power to negotiate a sizeable £20m deal for him.

They were keen to keep him, however, and Hull Live have now revealed that the second-tier side offered to almost triple his salary. But the 21-year-old's move to the Bees wasn't money motivated, according to the same outlet, with the younger attacker desperately wanting to ply his trade in the top flight.

The Verdict:

Fair play to Lewis-Potter - because it would have been easy for him to sign a new deal and remain in his comfort zone in the MKM Stadium - having spent several years at the club.

And some wouldn't have blamed him for signing an extension too, not just because of the money but because Acun Ilicali seems intent on getting the Tigers back to the Premier League.

This ambition and the takeover has increased excitement around the club once more - but the 21-year-old clearly wanted to play top-tier football as soon as possible.

And in fairness to him, he has an actual chance of making a decent impact at the Brentford Community Stadium, with his game time probably likely to have been limited at the likes of Tottenham and West Ham.

There's a real chance he would have developed more in East Yorkshire as a guaranteed starter - but he could take his game to the next level in the top tier and this is why many Hull supporters have understood his decision to move on.
