Hull City are interested in signing Fleetwood Town defender Cian Bolger.

According to reliable journalist Alan Nixon, the 26-year-old could be in line for a move away from the League One side who is out of favour at Highbury under manager Joey Barton.

Bolger has made three appearances for Fleetwood this season, two in the league either side of a Carabao Cup fixture against Crewe Alexandra.

Earlier in the summer, Rotherham United were keen admirers of Bolger, but a move did not materialise after the Millers landed Sean Raggett from Norwich on a season-long loan deal.

The 26-year-old has scored five goals in 27 appearances for the Cod Army but now has a week left to sort out his own future with the news he is not a part of Barton’s plans and would welcome a move away with Hull being the likeliest destination.

The Verdict

If Cian Bolger is out of favour at the League One side and a move to the Championship is on the cards, then it is a no-brainer.

Hull have the fourth worst defence in the division, and defensive recruits are much needed to help plug a leaky backline.

Bolger has been a player in demand during the summer, and a late swoop for the 26-year-old could be precisely what Nigel Adkins at the KCOM stadium needs.

It is a surprise that the defender is not in Joey Barton’s plans but if he is set to leave then move to a higher division is one certainly worth considering.
