On-loan Hull City defender Sean McLoughlin has revealed he is unsure of what his future will hold with his current spell at St Mirren set to end in January.

The 23-year-old has spent the first half of the 2019/20 campaign on loan at Scottish top-flight side St Mirren.

The Buddies have struggled this season, and sit second bottom, but McLoughlin has been an important player, playing every minute of the league campaign so far.

The centre-back's current spell at St Mirren is set to expire in January and he revealed to the Evening Express that he is unsure of what his future will hold past that point.

He said: "We’ve got a busy run of fixtures coming up so everyone is really just focusing on that. Once the time comes in January we’ll sit down and see what’s the best thing to do for the two clubs and for me.”

McLoughlin added that in some ways his loan deal had been the "perfect outcome" so far.

He explained: "I’ve really enjoyed being up here. The main goal was to play and I’ve done that. I knew coming here to a new league would be tough but to have played in every single game is the perfect outcome for me.

“I’d definitely encourage lads in a similar position to come up here and give it a shot.”

The defender joined the Tigers from League of Ireland side Cork City in the summer, signing a three-year deal at the Yorkshire club.

The Republic of Ireland U21 international was sent straight out on loan by manager Grant McCann, who clearly felt playing regular first-team football would be the best thing for his development.

Without McLoughlin, Hull have had an inconsistent start to the season but are only five points adrift of the top six.

The Verdict

McLoughlin appears to have made a good impression at St Mirren as he has been a key part of their defensive line so far.

It will be interesting to see what Hull look to do in January. It sounds as if the defender is enjoying his time at the Scottish club, so it may make sense to keep him there.

However, it could be a smart idea to send him on loan somewhere in the Championship to gain experience at that level.
