Charlton Athletic fans cannot help but be encouraged by comments made by club director Steve Gallen at a Supporters Trust Q&A, after he stated that Lee Bowyer is desperate for a long-term contract at the club.
Bowyer is on a rolling one-year contract with owner Roland Dutchatelet refusing to give him a long-term deal, due to the fact that he feels it may stall any potential buyers of the club.
This is because of the compensation that a new owner would have to pay Bowyer if they were to decide that they were going to bring in their own people to the club.
So how big is this for Charlton fans the fact that Bowyer wants to stay at the Addicks?
“This will come as hugely encouraging news for Charlton fans given the work Bowyer has done since last season, but it will now be down to the club to try and maintain his services in a competitive market.
“There are likely to be plenty of clubs pursuing Bowyer in the near future, and Charlton need to prove to the 42-year-old that the club has resources to meet his ambitions. If they can achieve this, then it seems likely Bowyer will stay at the club.
“Bowyer has created an exciting Charlton side over the last year or so and, while they lost some players over the summer, Bowyer helped his side towards effective recruitment and he is now utilising his strong tactical awareness to make the most of his side.
“The ex-midfielder has clearly shown his capability to work well on a tight budget, and this is a key quality that Charlton need in their manager given the club’s current financial restrictions.”
“When you consider just how much of an impact Bowyer has had at the Valley since taking over in 2018, the news that he wants to stay at Charlton will be music to the ears of the club’s supporters.
“Having guided the Addicks to promotion via the play-offs in May, the 42-year-old has since experienced an encouraging start to life in the Championship.
“With his Charlton side currently occupying 11th place in the second-tier standings, there is no reason why Bowyer cannot go on to achieve a great deal of success during the remainder of the current campaign in south east London.
“By keeping Bowyer at the club for the foreseeable future, the Addicks could establish themselves as a Championship side once again following several years of turmoil.”
Should Charlton fans be encouraged that Lee Bowyer wants to stay at the Addicks?
“What a boost this would be for the Addicks.
“Charlton’s success have largely been down to the management of Bowyer, who has surprised me for all the right reasons so far.
“I wouldn’t have been surprised to see Bowyer depart for a club with a better chance of winning promotion into the Premier League earlier this season, but it’s good to see him saying that he wants to remain at The Valley.
“Without Bowyer in charge, I think the Addicks would be facing a relegation battle, and the club need to do everything they can to show him a long-term project that is in place for the future.
“This is the best possible news for Charlton.”
