‘Huge decision’ – Charlton star set to make big call amid Rangers interest: Opinion

After winning promotion to the Sky Bet Championship in quite remarkable fashion, Charlton Athletic will be looking to keep hold of their key figures ahead of the new season.

Manager Lee Bowyer’s deal is up at the end of the month, with Joe Aribo, Jonny Williams and Patrick Bauer all facing uncertain futures at the Valley between now and July.

The latter was the Addicks’ hero in the League One play-off final, scoring the winner with practically the last kick of the game to send Charlton back into the second tier, after putting in a series of solid displays throughout the season.

Rangers, Blackburn, and QPR are just a handful of teams that have been linked with the defender’s signature, but reports claim that the big German is set to snub interest from rivals and sign a new deal at Charlton.

Here, we discuss if this is the right decision for the defender…

George Harbey

“I think this is the right decision by Bauer.

“Charlton are definitely in good hands under Lee Bowyer, and Bauer will know that he will always be a key player under the former Leeds midfielder.

“Also, at his age, he needs to be playing a competitive level, and is the SPFL really that competitive?”

Gary Hutchinson

“Huge decision, but the right one as well.

“I’d love to see him stay put. He’s been a big part of the Charlton success story and now he looks like cementing his legend with them as well.

“Turning down Rangers might seem a silly move, but there are more big games in the Championship than in Scotland.

“What a boost this might be for Lee Bowyer.”

George Brooks

“It’s certainly a bold decision for Bauer to turn down Rangers, but I think it’s the right one.

“He’s been an important player for Charlton over the past few seasons and perhaps he feels that his story at the club is not finished yet.

“Bauer looks like he’s good enough to make the step up to the Championship, so it will be a massive boost for Charlton if he does decide to stay.”
