Preston North End have won the race to sign Ben Whiteman - with the Doncaster Rovers captain moving to Deepdale on a long-term contract the club have confirmed.

Having joined from Sheffield United in the summer of 2017, Whiteman has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Championship, and now finally gets his opportunity in the second-tier, following more than 150 appearances for the Keepmoat Stadium outfit.

Whiteman becomes Preston's fourth January signing of what is already becoming a productive window for Alex Neil - following the arrivals of Jayson Molumby, Ched Evans and goalkeeper Daniel Iversen on loan from Leicester City.

Despite being a midfielder, Whiteman has been in outstanding goalscoring form this season, scoring eight times in 23 appearances in all competitions, and has chipped in with four assists in what has been his best goal-return during his playing career.

Preston have won three of their four Championship games this season, and although they've generally struggled for consistency, they still have top-six hopes heading into the home straight.

And it appears that the Deepdale outfit are delighted with the addition of Whiteman and Neil's January business as a whole.
