Huddersfield Town’s intentions over duo become clearer following recent contract decision

Huddersfield Town chose to trigger extensions in the contracts of both Juninho Bacuna and Iscaac Mbenza because the Terriers plan to cash in on them this summer, according to Yorkshire Live.

Bacuna and Mbenza were both set to be free agents this summer, before Huddersfield announced within their retained list that they had triggered one-year extensions on the contracts of the pair.

That is set to see them potentially stick around at Huddersfield next season in the Championship, and the pair might be able to play an important role for them if they do stay with the Terriers.

However, Yorkshire Live’s latest update has revealed that the intention behind the club activating their one-year extensions was so that they could recoup some money for them in the transfer window this summer.

Although the report also added that the Terriers would not have elected to trigger their extensions if they did not feel that they wanted them to stick around the squad for next season, in the event that a permanent buyer could not be found for them.

21 things every Huddersfield Town fan should know about their club, so can you score 100% on this?

1. What year were Huddersfield founded?

That suggests that there is the potential for both players to still be part of their squad next season, but ideally, the Terriers would like to bring in some funds to strengthen the squad further by selling off both Bacuna and Mbenza.

The verdict

This is not the most surprising news really, considering that Mbenza and Bacuna are two assets that the club can bring in at least a little bit of money for this summer. It seems like a very sensible approach to have taken and if they can find buyers for them then it would enable them to use that money to enhance the squad further.

Should Mbenza stick around, he has already shown he can be a valuable option for them to call upon in the Championship. The attacker weighed in with five goals and seven assists in 36 games last term and therefore he might be a player that attracts some interest in the market.

Bacuna, meanwhile, is another player that does have a lot of quality to bring to the squad when he is at his best. However, he is also someone with the potential to deliver more than he does at times on a consistent basis. The hope will be that a team takes a punt that they can get more out of him over the coming years if they make a move this summer.
