Play-off finalists Huddersfield Town are currently keeping tabs on Wycombe Wanderers centre-back Ryan Tafazolli ahead of the summer window, according to a report from The Sun.

The 30-year-old played an integral part for Gareth Ainsworth's side again this season, making 38 competitive appearances for the Chairboys during the 2021/22 campaign and recording five goals and two assists in the process.

One of these goals came against MK Dons in the play-off semi-final, with the defender managing to guide the ball home following a wonderful cross by Joe Jacobson, a goal that gave them the momentum needed to see off Liam Manning's men.

Unfortunately for him, he was unable to guide Ainsworth's side back to the second tier again following their 2-0 loss to Sunderland earlier this month, but the central defender could make the step up regardless with the Terriers monitoring his situation.

They will be in need of a replacement for Levi Colwill following the expiration of his loan deal at the John Smith's Stadium, with Naby Sarr's potential departure at the end of his deal this summer perhaps forcing Carlos Corberan to bring in more than one player in this position.

Corberan's side believes Tafazolli could potentially be the ideal man to come in if they remain in the second tier, with the club planning for the worst outcome of remaining in the division.

The Verdict:

This could be a shrewd move from the Terriers if Wycombe are willing to come to the negotiating table because it's not as if the latter are going to make a huge amount of money from the 30-year-old.

That may allow a cut-price deal to be negotiated and with Tafazolli having experience in the second tier, he could thrive if he makes the move to West Yorkshire and the defender will have no shortage of motivation to do well either.

He could potentially seal his plan in Iran's squad for the World Cup later this year if he continues to shine - and his hopes of being in Qatar may be boosted if he takes the step up to the second tier - so it would be hard to see him not being open to this move.

That should ensure that negotiations on personal terms run smoothly, enabling the Terriers to bring him in quite early on and that could enable the 30-year-old to get a full pre-season of football under his belt with the second-tier side.

And with the play-off final taking place today, Huddersfield will know whether he should be a target for them by this evening. If they do reach the Premier League, it would be hard to see them making a move for him.
