Huddersfield Town remain open to Jon Russell’s exit today, although the club are waiting for reports of Rotherham United and West Brom interest to emerge into something concrete as the hours tick by towards the 11pm transfer deadline.

Russell hasn’t featured for Huddersfield since a 3-1 defeat to Reading FC in early October, a fixture that was Mark Fotheringham’s first in-charge.

Since then, he’s made the matchday squad just three times as an unused substitute, failing to feature on the bench in any of Fotheringham’s last 11 selections in all competitions.

There has been speculation linking Russell with a move to Rotherham and also West Brom, where former Huddersfield head coach, Carlos Corberan, is currently working. The 22-year-old played regularly for Corberan during the second-half of last season.

Yorkshire Live have now detailed where things stand with Russell ahead of tonight’s 11pm transfer deadline: “It has been made pretty clear both through Mark Fotheringham’s words and deeds that the midfielder is not in the head coach’s plans and that his career would be better served by finding a new club.

“The question is whether anybody will actually come in and make a serious enquiry. Rotherham United and West Bromwich Albion were both linked earlier in the window, but as of midway through deadline day, those reports do not seem to have translated into action.”

Russell has made 30 appearances for Huddersfield and scored two goals since emerging out of the B-Team and into the senior setup a year ago.

Fotheringham’s side currently sit 22nd in the Championship table, three points adrift of safety.

The Verdict

Russell’s situation at Huddersfield is an interesting one and it’s actually quite surprising that nobody has moved to agree something for him already this month, with his exile at the John Smith’s Stadium outlasting the window.

There’s more to it than that, of course, and even if the 11pm comes tonight without any movement, it could still be that Russell is bought out of the remainder of his contract and becomes a free agent, which then opens the door for him to move elsewhere.

Under Fotheringham, there appears to be no future for the midfielder in Huddersfield, so something is eventually going to have to give.
