Huddersfield Town are set to open talks with young midfielder, Lewis O'Brien over a new deal according to Examiner Live.

The Terriers midfielder has two years remaining on his current deal with the club, but he is highly-regarded, hence why they are keen to extend his deal in the near future.

O'Brien spent last season out on loan with Bradford City, where he made 46 appearances in all competitions.

But he was unable to stop the Bantams from being relegated into League Two, in a hugely disappointing league campaign for everyone associated with the club.

He has made a good impression so far in pre-season, catching the eye in their recent games against German side, Greuther Furth.

The 20-year-old is yet to feature for the Huddersfield first-team, but he'll be hoping to force his way into Jan Siewert's plans on a regular basis as soon as possible.

The Terriers are preparing for life back in the Championship after a brief spell in the Premier League, so first-team opportunities shouldn't be ruled out at this stage.

Huddersfield get their season underway against Derby County, in what will be a tricky test in their first game back in the second tier of English football.

The Verdict:

This is a smart move by Huddersfield.

O'Brien clearly has something about him if the club are looking to come to an agreement with him in the near future, despite him already having two years remaining on his current deal.

He'll be hoping to break into the first-team in the near future to prove his worth at a higher level.
