Huddersfield Town manager Danny Cowley has revealed that returning goalkeeper Jonas Lossl actually took a slight pay cut to rejoin the club from Everton in January.

The Terriers were in the market to add more experience between the sticks when it was revealed that on-loan Liverpool ‘keeper Kamil Grabara was set to miss a bare minimum of a month of action following his horrible head injury against Hull City, in which was kept in hospital for two nights.

Cowley moved quickly to plug this alarming gap by confirming the return of Danish goalkeeper Jonas Lossl on loan until the end of the season from Everton.

Lossl was part of Huddersfield’s adventure in the Premier League and clearly attracted a lot of admirers upon their relegation, seeing him retain his top-flight status with a move to Goodison Park.

Lossl made his second debut for the Terriers at the weekend and put in a solid performance as he and the side kept a clean sheet and won 2-0 against QPR.

Reflecting on Lossl’s decision to return to the John Smith’s Stadium, Cowley revealed that Lossl was that eager to rejoin the club that he accepted a reduction in wages to ensure a move went through.

Cowley stated (as quoted by the Examiner): "For the supporters, we knew they had a relationship with him and when I first spoke to Jonas you could really feel his love for the club and the supporters and you could feel that he wanted to come back and help.

"That really motivated us to try and get it done and thankfully we were able.

"We have to thank Jonas in that because Jonas has actually taken a bit of a pay cut as well to make it happen, he wanted it to happen that much.

"That's a testament to him. I'm not sure his wife's too happy, but hey-ho."

Do you know where these former Huddersfield players are now?

The verdict

It shows a great amount of commitment to the club that Lossl was happy to take a cut in his wages just so he could move back to Huddersfield.

He was great for the Terriers in the Premier League and it wasn’t a surprise that he earned a move to the Toffees in the summer.

It’s been a tough start to life away from Huddersfield for him as Jordan Pickford remains Carlo Ancelotti’s number one, so a move away was the smartest option for him.

Lossl couldn’t have asked for a better start on his return, keeping a clean sheet in front of the fans that have adored him ever since he joined.
