The Huddersfield Examiner are reporting that Dean Whitehead believes that Huddersfield Town can still catch Newcastle United and claim the second automatic promotion spot.

Huddersfield slipped up at Derby County with a 1-1 draw on Easter Monday and that result saw Brighton clinch promotion to the Premier League.

The battle for second spot is now on between Newcastle United and Huddersfield Town despite both teams suffering setbacks in recent weeks.

Newcastle have picked up just one point in their last three matches; losing to Sheffield Wednesday and Ipswich Town and drawing against Leeds United.

Huddersfield have suffered disappointing losses against relegation threatened trio Bristol City, Burton Albion and Nottingham Forest recently and if they had picked up those nine points, the Terriers would be two points ahead of Newcastle with a game in hand.

Instead, they trail by seven points and could cut the gap to four if they win their game in hand.

Dean Whitehead said:

“We still believe.

“We’ve got a strong dressing room, it’s positive and we will fight to the end and see where it takes us.

“We’ll try to win every game that we’ve got left and see if it’s enough.

“Our confidence is high, we haven’t lost any belief at any point in the season and we showed we’ve got spirit and togetherness.

“We have plans and we try to stick to that.”
