Huddersfield Town had a good season under the management of Carlos Corberan finishing the league sat third in the table and making it to the play-off final.

Unfortunately for the Terriers, they were beaten by a Nottingham Forest side at Wembley that were the better team on the day – though they will feel disappointed that the deciding goal was a Levi Colwill own goal.

Nevertheless, Huddersfield will now be looking ahead to next season with a positive mindset hoping that they can get their recruitment right to push on next year.

Since Leigh Bromby took over as head of football operations, many feel as though the Terriers' recruitment has improved something they will be looking to continue to show this summer.

Reflecting on last season's recruitment and its success, Bromby told Yorkshire Live: "Most conversations were around January time, so we were obviously trying to identify players for that window. We always knew even when Carlos first came in that the window was going to be the key window. We knew exactly what we could spend, we knew where the budget would be, we knew there would be an opportunity to bring players in because of players leaving.

"Maybe for the 12 months when Carlos started we knew it was significant and it was trying to put those things in place. We knew we were going to go for free transfers; it wasn't the market to spend money, and we knew there were going to be players out of contract at value, so there was no point going into the market and thinking right, we'll spend money in the transfer window because not many clubs were.

"I know people make a big song and dance about us not spending any money but it's mainly dictated by opportunity and knowing those players were out of contract. We didn't select, for example, Matty Pearson because he was a free transfer: he was someone we needed and we needed his attributes in the team."

Bromby was keen to shed light on the work being done behind the scenes as he used the example of Sorba Thomas explaining: "He basically had his own staffing cohort around him to support him, because coming from non-league football and playing in the Championship is not normal.

"So the support needed around that - for example, nutrition, psychology, coaching, physical performance, analysis on the tactical side...you've got five or six key components around him and individual staff member to work with him. That takes a lot of resource, it takes a lot of time, it takes a lot of effort form the staff to put all that together. Obviously, then there's the recruitment in that, making sure we're recruiting the right player that can play the way we want to play."

Looking ahead to this summer, the Terriers will be hoping to get it right again and Bromby feels the new model will only help.

He explained: "It's having those processes in place that make sure it's 90%, not 60%, and that's what we're trying to focus on: making sure that any player that comes in gets the work that's needed to make them successful.

"If you look at the project last summer, it was always a defensive mode, it was being able to be competitive in this league by not conceding lots of goals, scoring from set pieces, and it was always then to progress this summer to can we add attacking players and a little bit more quality in the attacking areas."

The Verdict

Last summer was clearly a strong one for Huddersfield in terms of recruitment and that has been reflected on the pitch this season and now it's easier to understand why they were so successful.

Not only are they putting a massive amount of planning into their signings, but they are also building the structure at the club to ensure that every player is able to settle into the environment well-meaning they can go for more ambitious signings worrying less about their ability to adapt.

It seems as though there's a clear plan for progression at the club and an area to go next with possible attacking options being favoured this summer.

Therefore, the fans will be looking at this hoping for another summer of success to help them push on next season.
