Huddersfield Town are interested in signing 17-year-old starlet Luke Matheson from Rochdale this month, according to the Daily Mail.

The Terriers have been very active this transfer window under Danny Cowley, bringing in four new players and handing them all their debuts against Brentford at the weekend. Harry Toffolo became the fourth addition after Emile Smith-Rowe, Richard Stearman and Andy King joined the club recently.

Now, Cowley is reportedly setting his sights on young Rochdale full-back Luke Matheson who has impressed a lot in League One and the domestic cups this season, scoring at Old Trafford against Manchester United and providing an assist at Spotland when they faced Newcastle United in the FA Cup.

The Daily Mail have reported that Huddersfield are keen on signing him this month after these top performances at such a young age. With one goal and two assists in 14 appearances, he is already making a name for himself under manager Brian Barry-Murphy.

The Terriers have conducted most of their January business already, strengthening in key areas knowing that players may be on their way out, but this deal would appear to be an investment for the future.

Danny Cowley’s knowledge of League One will be vast, having managed Lincoln City at the start of the season, so he will be no stranger to the talent that Matheson possesses.

The verdict

This would be a very shrewd signing for Huddersfield if they can pull it off because there won’t be a shortage of teams interested in Matheson, given how well he is playing at just 17-years-old.

It might be a tough deal because Rochdale won’t want to lose a prized asset, however, the jump up in division is always tempting and working under a manager well-suited to guiding similar players would be very beneficial.
