Huddersfield Town interim chief executive Mark Devin has suggested that the Terriers will be focusing on ensuring they bring in the right sort of players to help Danny Cowley structure the squad he wants over the next two transfer windows.

The Terriers enjoyed a productive transfer window in January, managing to bring Jonas Lossl back to the club on loan from Everton, as well as signing Emile Smith Rowe on loan from Arsenal, bringing in Chris Willock from Benfica and Richard Stearman from Sheffield United.

Cowley will be hoping that those arrivals can help him to keep the Terriers in the Championship during the rest of the season, and then he will be hopeful of building on that by bringing in the sort of players he needs to help get the club challenging nearer the top end of the division.

Speaking to the Huddersfield Examiner, Devlin suggested that the club are focusing on not just the summer transfer window but also the following winter window to help bring in the right sort of players to help Cowley transform the squad.

He said: "Retaining our place in the Championship is really important first and foremost.

"Then not only this window coming up in the summer, but we will be planning for the next January one as well.

"You are always looking a couple of windows ahead to mould the squad and the players Danny wants to bring in to get the team playing well."

The verdict

These comments certainly suggest that Huddersfield do have a structure in place and a plan for the summer transfer window if they are able to avoid relegation to League One this campaign, and could raise hopes that the Terriers could have a stronger squad for the start of next season.

However, Cowley must first ensure that he manages to keep the club in the Championship, and to do that he will need to get his side to improve from the performance they showed in the 3-0 defeat against Cardiff City in mid-week.

The Terriers did manage to make some improvements to their squad in the January window, and those additions have made reasonably solid starts to their time at the club, and they should help to ensure that Huddersfield have enough in their squad to avoid relegation.

It will then be vital that Huddersfield identify the right sort of players to bring in to improve the squad in the next two windows, if they are to be able to battle it out at the right end of the table next season in what will be Cowley’s first full campaign in charge.
