Huddersfield Town could be set to make a profit this January window should striker Nahki Wells be sold by Burnley this transfer window.

Wells, joined the Clarets from Town in August 2017 but has failed to make an impact during his time at Turf Moor, instead enjoying two loan spells with Championship side Queens Park Rangers.

However, it has been reported that Wells could be making a permanent switch away from Turf Moor, with both Nottingham Forest and Bristol City looking to secure the player's signature.

On Tuesday, TEAMtalk reported that Burnley are weighing up an offer for Bristol City's Josh Brownhill including throwing in Wells as part of the deal.

On Thursday, however, the Sky Sports Transfer Centre (23/01/20 15:23) reported that Nottingham Forest were also looking to secure Wells' signature at the City Ground.

It has now come to light that Huddersfield Town will be monitoring Wells' situation over the coming week, with the potential of a possible payout should Wells move this month.

The Huddersfield Examiner has reported that there is roughly a 15% sell on clause as part of the deal that saw Wells leave the John Smith's Stadium back in 2017.

The 29-year-old's contract with the Clarets is set to expire in the summer, and despite Sean Dyche's side having the right to exercise a 12-month extension it looks likely Burnley may want to cash in this window.

Town, however, would only see a % of any fee for Wells should the Clarets make a profit on the initial transfer fee they paid for him back in 2017.

The Verdict

Huddersfield will be monitoring this situation closely as they could receive a potential fee should Wells move from Burnley this window.

Although this may seem exciting at the moment it may be hard to envisage Town actually benefiting from an upcoming sale of the forward.

The deal states that Town would only receive cash should Burnley make a profit on what they paid for the player two-and-a-half years ago.

The Huddersfield Examiner has reported the fee to be in the £5M mark back in 2017 and I find it hard to believe that Forest or Bristol City would pay more than that for an out of favour.

The Bristol City link suggests that Burnley are to bid £3M plus Wells for Josh Brownhill, which may even struggle to push the value of the transfer over the £5M mark.
