Huddersfield Town have confirmed the signing of winger Isaac Mbenza from French club Montpellier HSC for an undisclosed fee.

Mbenza spent last season on loan at Huddersfield, who have now exercised the option to permanently sign him on an initial two-year deal with the option for a further year.

The 23-year-old was not a regular feature throughout last season, as he made a total of 24 appearances as the Terriers suffered relegation from the Premier League. However, he did establish himself in Jan Siewert's side towards the end of the season despite suffering from a calf injury.

Mbenza's performances earned him a place in the Belgium side for the Under-21 European Championships in June, and he played in all three games as the Red Devils crashed out at the group stage.

He is now scheduled to link up with the Terriers on July 15 as they step up preparations for their Championship return in August.

The Verdict

I think this could prove to be an inspired move from Huddersfield as they look to build a squad capable of competing at the top end of the Championship.

Mbenza struggled in difficult circumstances at the club last season, but he managed to work his way firmly into the side under Siewert. This shows that the Terriers' German boss rates Mbenza's ability, and clearly feels the winger can operate well in his system.

It was not a great environment for Mbenza to shine last season, but he showed flashes of his quality including an excellent assist against Burnley last season.

I think dropping down a tier to the Championship will allow Mbenza to thrive more next season, and he could well become a key part of Siewert's plans.
