Huddersfield Town have confirmed the signing of former AFC Bournemouth and Aston Villa defender, Tommy Elphick.

Elphick has been a free agent since his time with Aston Villa came to an end earlier this year, and he's seemingly made a good impression with the Terriers.

Huddersfield will be keen to make an immediate return to the Premier League, following their relegation back into the Championship after a brief spell in the top-flight.

Terriers boss, Jan Siewert issued his thoughts on their first signing of the summer, and expressed his delight at getting the deal over the line, with other clubs said to be interested in signing Elphick.

"Tommy's arrival is a fantastic start to our summer transfer business.

"There was a lot of interest in Tommy from several other clubs, which is totally understandable; it is rare that a player of his quality is available as a free agent.

Siewert went on to outline Elphick's qualities, that he hopes the defender can bring to the Huddersfield team next season, as they prepare for life back in the Championship.

"Tommy adds a lot of knowledge about the Sky Bet Championship to our squad. It’s also clear from our meetings and from his career that he has real leadership qualities, which is an important asset."

Huddersfield supporters will be keen to see their season get underway, with the EFL fixtures set to be released on Thursday ahead of the new season in August.

The Verdict:

This is a smart bit of business.

Elphick knows the Championship well, and will surely go straight into their starting XI next season if he can stay injury free.

His experience and leadership qualities will also be a real benefit to this Huddersfield team, as they look to make an immediate return to the Premier League, after their recent relegation from the top-flight.
