Huddersfield Town are close to securing a surprise swoop for former Millwall winger Connor Mahoney, according to Alan Nixon on Patreon.

The 25-year-old was released by Millwall this summer following a three-year stint with the Lions - a spell in which he featured just 54 times in the Championship for the South London club.

A former England youth international at three different levels, Mahoney is set to put pen-to-paper on a two-year deal at the John Smith's Stadium as Carlos Corberan looks to add to his attacking options following last season's Championship play-off final loss against Nottingham Forest.

And despite his injury and fitness concerns in recent years, Mahoney is set to be given a chance by the Spaniard to compete with the likes of Sorba Thomas and Josh Koroma out wide.

Mahoney started his career off at Accrington Stanley before switching to nearby Blackburn Rovers in 2013.

He played 16 times for Rovers before being picked up by AFC Bournemouth in 2017 when the Cherries were a Premier League club, but he failed to make an appearance for them before moving on to Millwall.

Having featured just 11 times in all competitions for Millwall last season, Gary Rowett decided not to renew Mahoney's contract - but he's set for another chance in the second tier.

The Verdict

Mahoney would have perhaps been expecting to drop down a level considering his lack of recent game-time.

But he looks to have landed on his feet at Huddersfield, who will no doubt be wanting to push for promotion again next season.

There's no doubting that Mahoney has technical ability or else Bournemouth would not have signed him five years ago despite his lack of senior game-time.

It is Mahoney's fitness and injury issues over the years that are a cause for concern, but if they can be ironed out then he could be a risk-free asset for the Terriers.
