Huddersfield Town’s wait for a first win under Danny Cowley goes on, with 10-man Millwall holding the Terriers to a 1-1 draw at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Fraizer Campbell had fired the home side ahead, but Matt Smith’s equaliser on 41 minutes secured Neil Harris’ side a point on the road.

Survival is the order of the day in Huddersfield. Cowley knows that and is drilling it to the fans at every opportunity; programme notes and press conferences in particular.

And, that message looked to have been sent to his players from the off.

This was a lively start from Town, they were just lacking in the final third.

Lucky, then, that Millwall were too.

A breaking Jed Wallace almost put Millwall ahead on 22 minutes, curling a right-footed shot wide of Kamil Grabara’s far post.

Then, just two minutes later, we got the game’s first piece of real quality for Huddersfield’s opener.

Cowley’s left-side did well to turn the ball over in the Millwall half, with Karlan Grant breaking beyond the Lions’ defence and into the area.

He could’ve shot, but laid a lovely square ball back into the path of Campbell, who buried his first goal of the season.

Town’s front three of Grant, Campbell and Elias Kachunga were causing Millwall no-end of problems, and Cowley would have been hoping to see his side punish the Lions whilst they were on the ropes.

Kachunga headed at Bart Bialkowski and Campbell over his bar, as the important second goal evaded the home side.

Harris’ side got to grips with Town after the half-hour mark, and controversially equalised through Smith on 41 minutes.

Ryan Leonard had forced an excellent save out of Kamil Grabara, but the resulting corner, swung in from the right, was spilled by the Town goalkeeper under pressure from Smith, who swept in the loose ball.

The Terriers protested, but the goal stood and Cowley’s defence were guilty of being too soft – not for the first time this season.

Millwall being Millwall, set-pieces were a threat throughout the first-half, with Harris’ side – now on top – pressing as the half-time whistle approached.

The balance of the game coming out of half-time was in Huddersfield’s favour. Kachunga forced a corner down the right, with the delivery causing problems and missing a finishing touch.

Cowley turned to his bench and replaced Kachunga with Adama Diakhaby, before urging the crowd to up the noise at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Jaden Brown worked himself into a strong position down the left, but, again, Huddersfield’s final ball let them down, his cross too strong for Grant and Campbell.

Cowley felt his side should’ve had two penalties as the game ticked past the hour. Firstly, Grant was brought down scampering across the area, then, Diakhaby felled by Jake Cooper. Both soft, but the manager’s frustrations were visible.

Millwall brought on Tom Bradshaw as Harris looked to offer Smith some support, as the Lions boss aimed to swing the game back into his side’s favour, just as he managed in the first-half.

It worked to a certain extent, but as the game approached its final 10 minutes, Millwall looked to be settling for a point.

Shane Ferguson was dismissed on 80 minutes after bringing down the breaking Diakhaby – who had also brought the left-back’s first caution on with his rapid running.

The winger would fire the resulting free-kick wide, with Campbell then glancing a header harmlessly beyond the far post. Again, Town’s lack of cutting edge staring Cowley in the face against 10-men.

Clear-cut chances evaded Town as six minutes of injury time drained away, with Millwall defending well. Harris’ side might be without a win since August 17, but this point will feel a decent one.

And, if they wanted any condolence for their difficult run, Town’s last win came back in February.

If Cowley is to guide his new club to safety, that needs addressing and sides like 10-man Millwall need putting to the sword.

FULL-TIME: Huddersfield Town 1-1 Millwall.
