Huddersfield Town are interested in signing Doncaster Rovers midfielder Ben Whiteman in the January transfer window, a report from Football Insider has claimed.

It has been a difficult start to the Championship campaign for the Terriers, who are currently 19th in the second-tier standings, four points clear of the relegation zone.

Manager Danny Cowley is said to be planning for a busy transfer window at the turn of the year, in order to strengthen his side with a view to climbing up the Championship table.

According to the latest reports, those plans have seen the Terriers set their sights on Doncaster club captain Whiteman, who was previously linked with another Championship side, Hull City, in the summer, following their appointment of former Donny boss Grant McCann as their new manager.

It is thought that Doncaster are once again bracing themselves for interest in their skipper in January, despite the fact that he only signed a new contract with the club last month, which is not set to expire until the summer of 2023.

Whiteman initially joined Doncaster on loan from Sheffield United in the summer of 2017, making his move permanent the following January.

In total, the versatile midfielder has made 120 appearances in all competitions for Doncaster, scoring 15 goals.

The Verdict

This could be a smart move for Huddersfield.

Adding someone such as Whiteman to their side would add a significant presence in the centre of the park for the Terriers, which may well help them to control games and see results out.

That is something that could be crucial for Cowley's side as they look to pull away from the bottom three in the second half of the campaign, and build for a future push back towards the Premier League.

Even so, with Whiteman having only recently signed that news long term contract with Doncaster, it may not be easy for the Terriers to secure his signature.
