Brighton are set to make midfielder Aaron Mooy's loan move from Huddersfield Town permanent, a report from The Telegraph has claimed.

Mooy joined the Seagulls on a season-long loan deal during the summer transfer window, and has already impressed during his time at the AMEX Stadium.

The 29-year-old midfielder has made 18 in appearances in all competitions for Brighton during his time on the south coast, scoring two goals for the Seagulls.

It is now thought that Brighton will look to make Mooy's move permanent this month in order to fend off competition from any of their Premier League rivals for the midfielder's signature in the summer, following his eye-catching displays the season.

According to the latest reports, Mooy is set to cost Brighton somewhere in the region of £5million, and will be the club's first signing of the January transfer window.

Having originally joined Huddersfield from Manchester City - for whom he never made a senior appearance - in the summer of 2016/17, Mooy went onto feature 120 times in total for the Terriers, helping them win promotion to the Premier League during his debut campaign with the club.

Mooy only signed a new contract with Huddersfield when his loan to Brighton was confirmed this summer, with that deal securing his future at the John Smith's Stadium until the summer of 2022.

Brighton are currently 15th in the Premier League table, just two points clear of the relegation zone following their 3-1 defeat away at fellow strugglers Bournemouth on Tuesday night.

The Verdict

This looks to be a really smart move by Brighton.

Mooy has been one of the brighter sparks of an otherwise difficult campaign for Graham Potter's side, so you feel this will be a big boost to their hopes of staying in the Premier League going forward, both this season and beyond.

Indeed, securing this deal now will be massive in terms of retaining the services of the midfielder in the summer, even if they are relegated from the top-flight this season.

While Mooy's contribution for Huddersfield during his time at the club should not be understated either, this could also help the Terriers, with the fee they look set to receive for the 29-year-old potentially helping them to strengthen their squad this month, as they look to avoid suffering relegation for a second consecutive season.
