We may not even have reached the end of August, but already those in charge at Huddersfield Town have put their necks on line this season, having taken the decision to sack manager Jan Siewert in the aftermath of the Terriers' 2-1 defeat to Fulham on Saturday.

In fairness to those calling the shots at the John Smith's Stadium, this wasn't exactly a difficult decision to make.

Siewert had won just one of his 19 games as Huddersfield manager, and left the club inside the Championship relegation zone after taking just a single point from their opening three games of the league campaign.

Throw in a first-round Carabao Cup defeat to newly-promoted League One side Lincoln City, and an audibly frustrated Huddersfield fan-base, and this looks like it was a pretty obvious call for the powers that be at the club to make.

What will be more a challenging decision, however, is appointing Siewert's successor.

With Huddersfield having won just four of their last 51 games, it is essential that they bring in the right man to help restore a winning mentality at the club, and pull them out of this rut that has really been going on since well before the start of last season.

Already it seems, they have given themselves plenty to think about.

According to recent reports, former Birmingham, Derby and Stoke boss Gary Rowett, current QPR assistant coach John Eustace and CFR Cluj manager Dan Petrescu are all under consideration, while Mark Hudson, who is caretaker charge of the cub at present, has admitted he would be interested in taking on the role full time.

It is also worth noting, however, that there does appear to be another candidate who is keen to put his name into contention, and it does seem to be one whose interest Huddersfield should welcome.

Aitor Karanka may have been out of work since leaving Nottingham Forest in January, but there is no doubting he still has the credentials to step in at a club such as Huddersfield in their current situation, with the Spaniard apparently eager to do just that.

Prior to his year-long spell at The City Ground - during which time he continued to demonstrate the top six potential that the club currently possesses - Karanka had already demonstrated his own ability to get teams into the Premier League, having done so with Middlesbrough in 2016.

Right now, however, it seems as though Huddersfield have a long way to go until they start thinking about promotion again. Not that that should put Karanka out of the picture for them right now.

During his time in England, Karanka developed a strong reputation for being defensively solid, and that too is something that the Terriers could really do with right now.

Considering the errors that have dominated Huddersfield's defence in the early part of this campaign, that is clearly an area that needs addressing for the Terriers, and Karanka does seem to be the sort of manager you would back to do just that.

It may take some time, but if Karanka is capable of reducing those errors in defence then you would back Huddersfield to start seeing games out more effectively.

With Karlan Grant already proving that he can be the man to get the goals upfront for the Terriers, you feel that that, combined with a newly instilled defensive solidity under someone such as Karanka, could finally start to see Huddersfield rediscover that elusive winning mentality, which might finally allow to them to start thinking about promotion again at some point down the line.

When that does become the case, you feel that once again they would have an arguably perfect candidate already in place for that role, given that experience in getting Middlesbrough to the top tier that Karanka has already enjoyed.

Considering the importance of this decision, finding a successor to Siewert will be a far from simple task for the Huddersfield hierarchy. With Karanka's interest, however, you feel that a more than viable option has been dropped into their laps. Given the heat they have taken for their unconventional appointment in the shape of Siewert, you feel that could be an option that is well worth taking.
