Huddersfield Town are reportedly close to signing 24-year-old Borussia Dortmund defender Herbert Bockhorn.

Manager Jan Siewert has brought in three players to strengthen his squad so far this summer, all from English football, but appears to have raided his former club in the Bundesliga for his fourth.

According to RevierSport, the ex-Dortmund IIs boss has agreed a deal worth €250,000 with the German club for Bockhorn, who is keen to reunite with Siewert at his new club.

The report suggests that the right-back will complete his medical in Huddersfield today and will then sign a two-year contract with the Terriers.

German side VFL Bochum were understood to be interested in the player until recently but are believed to have been put off by the transfer fee.

Bockhorn made 44 appearances for the Dortmund IIs during Siewert's 18 months as manager.

The Ugandan is a product of the Werder Bremen academy and arrived at Signal Iduna Park from Wiedenbruck in 2016, but has never featured for the Dortmund first team despite making 71 appearances for the Dortmund IIs.

Verdict

Siewert was brought in as David Wagner's replacement in January with an eye on this season and the German has already been busy making changes to the squad this summer.

The Bockhorn is clearly a talented player, having come through the Bremen system and spent so long in the Dortmund academy, and it seems Siewert was keen to reunite with him at the John Smith's Stadium.

He is comfortable playing further forward on the right-hand side, having played as a right midfielder and winger for much of his career, and will offer the Terriers versatility.

There will be questions over the 24-year-old's lack of first-team experience and whether he will be able to adapt to life in the Championship, but this seems like a good, cheap signing, and one that fits Siewert's system.
