Huddersfield are lining up a move for Gillingham frontman Mikael Mandron in order to help boost their Championship survival hopes this campaign, according to Football Insider.

Mandron has reportedly caught the eye of Danny Cowley since joining League One side Gillingham over the summer, while Peterborough and Burton are also said to be keeping tabs on the striker who has netted three goals in 19 league games this term.

The former Sunderland attacker may not boast the most fruitful goalscoring record in third tier, but it is understood that his overall game play has been the main factor to pique the Terriers' interest in his services.

It is being reported that Cowley is now set to prioritise attacking additions in the final week of the transfer window, with his Terriers side currently holding the worst goalscoring record in the second tier with just 31 strikes to their name this campaign.

However, it is believed that Huddersfield face competition if their interest in Mandron is serious with Peterborough watching the striker in case they lose frontman Ivan Toney, while Burton are thought to view the striker as a replacement for Liam Boyce who joined Hearts earlier this month.

The Verdict

Huddersfield should definitely be looking to improve their striking options this week following their struggles in front of goal this term, with this area being a necessity to strengthen if the Terriers are to safeguard their second-tier status.

However, I'm unconvinced that Mandron represents the answer to their goalscoring troubles given he has only managed to score three goals in the third tier this campaign, while he has only contributed two assists in addition to this.

It is true that Cowley may have identified Mandron as someone who can fit into his attacking vision for the side, but I think the Terriers should be placing priority on signing proven goal scorers who can help the relegation-threatened side immediately.

This should certainly be a fall-back option for Cowley and Huddersfield to consider if they fail to get other deals over the line, but there will surely be other options available that the Terriers should prioritise first.
